Illustration Friday: Hibernate

Illustration complete!

Nearly finished... just in need of a few shadows and highlights.

Here's my work in progress for this week's Illustration Friday topic 'hibernate'. I'm about half way through colouring and hope to post my completed illustration shortly.

The Pygmy Possum and Echidna are lucky enough to hibernate during Australia's cooler months. The rest of us have to find our own way to take time out for ourselves.

Look before you leap

I doubt Miss Lioness had thought much about the possible consequences before taking this leap of spontaneity. And I bet her classmate certainly didn't know what was coming.

Perennial sightings at Loch Ness

Sailing Crusoe

Here's my submission for this week's Illustration Friday topic 'perennial'. I was inspired by the book, The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith and the movie Water Horse Legend of the Deep.

Sketchbook... How to hide a lake monster

Inspired by the movie: Water Horse Legend of the Deep.

My six year old says a water horse would make the best pet because...

You can play with it in the bath. When it grows up, you can sail along lochs and dive into secret underwater worlds.

Beginner

"Ok, so I did like I was told and put my left foot in the stirrup first, then swung my right leg over. But nobody said anything about having to be on the left side of the horse!"

Lesson

The most important lesson in calf throwing is... never take your eyes off the calf.

The second important lesson is... don't be deceived by the dried outer crust of cow pie.

Stir

Princess and the Pea is my illustration for this week's Illustration Friday topic 'stir'.

* * *

The queen knew only a true princess would be so sensitive to stir all night.

The next day, the handsome prince asked the princess to marry him. Unfortunately for him, she had her super cranky pants on from having no sleep the night before. So she shoved the pea up his nose and fled the castle, never to be seen again.

Sadly, the prince never found true love and had to live with his mother until she finally kicked the bucket at a ripe old age of 114. And the pea? It was never, ever put into a museum silly! Nobody wants to look at a shriveled pea slimed in lonely prince booger! Rumor has it, that the pea was slipped into Thursday night's pea and ham soup. Let's hope it wasn't yours.

That's how the story goes in our house.

Warning

Warning
Illustration Friday

Pen and ink drawing - coloured digitally.

* * *

Look what I found while I was hiding out under the bed this morning! It's a pen and ink drawing I did way back in my art college days.

A lucky discovery for me as it happens to fit this week's Illustration Friday topic 'warning' and I don't have time today to draw anything new. With two sick kids at home, who turned out to be NOT so sick, my productivity has been stalled.

Originally, I drew these happy koalas in hope The Australian would publish it as part of a young cartoonist competition. But sadly it didn't win and was shoved in a box and forgotten. I revived my happy koalas this morning with some digital colouring while Scooby Doo entertained my NOT so sick kids.

Anyway, time to take cover under the bed again. I hear someone crying out MUMMY and I don't want to be caught sneaking another chocolate Freddo frog.

Swarm

Swarm
Illustration Friday

Breewyna the Butterfly Fairy guides her fluttery friends to the land of humans. One of my oldies for this week's Illustration Friday topic swarm.

I haven't had the chance to even pick up a pencil in the last couple of weeks. So I thought I would bring back one of my old illustrations from the whimsical days of Twinkle Star Art.

Deja-vu

Deja-vu
Illustration Friday

Do you ever get that deja-vu feeling?

I do, daily.

Each day my son asks, "Can I go outside and play soccer?"

And I reply, "No, you can't go outside sweetheart, it's raining."

Usually this would be ok. I mean, what's the harm in playing a little soccer in the rain? However, we live in Queensland (usually referred to as the Sunshine State of Australia). And if you have watched the world news recently, you would have heard someone mention that a massive flood has pretty much taken out our entire state. In fact inner city Brisbane is going under right now!

Fortunately for us, we live on a hill.

Not so fortunate for those sleeping on rooftops tonight seeking rescue boats. I'm sure many Queenslanders who lived near inner city Brisbane in 1974 will be suffering from a very bad case of deja-vu.

My prayers are with all those families who have lost or are missing loved ones. The last couple of days have been absolutely horrific here in South East Queensland.
